It’s a masterpiece of the same calibre as The Walking Dead, it’s one of the best games I’ve played all year (also, one of the best games I’ve played ever), and it might just be Telltale’s magnum opus.Īs with all Telltale reviews, I’m loathe to say more for fear of entering spoiler territory, but I don’t think more needs to be said at this point. I can’t recommend Tales from the Borderlands highly enough. I’m bummed to say goodbye to Telltale’s adventure on Pandora, but I'll be damned if it wasn’t one hell of a ride. All of the questions and mysteries from the previous four episodes pay off in wonderful fashion, while Episode 5 simultaneously introduces a slew of new, intriguing possibilities for the future of the world. From heartbreak to hilarity, it runs the gamut of emotions in some really effective ways. Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5: The Vault of the Traveler finishes off Rhys and Fiona’s journey in impeccable fashion. This story, these characters and this product are simply too good for only a small segment of the population to enjoy. If you have someone who you’ve always wanted to experience video games with but never could convince them to play, give Tales from the Borderlands a shot. The opening paragraph mentioned that this would make an excellent first game ever for someone, and this is a point that needs to be doubled down upon. Quite frankly, Telltale has knocked it out of the park, and if there’s ever to be a Borderlands 3 from Gearbox, it’d be an utter travesty to not see Telltale’s characters appear somehow in that game – that’s how fantastic this is. #TALES FROM THE BORDERLANDS EPISODE 5 INTRO SERIES#The choices you've made throughout the series matter and ripple outward to the finale, and with a cast as irritatingly loveable as this one, it's impossible not to care about where they're going next. It has its cataclysmic, epic moments, plot twists that were impossible to see coming, gut-wringing sad bits, and an embarrassing wealth of humor. It asks you what it means to be a hero, but on a deeper level explores themes of greed, family, friendship, and forgiveness. Tales from the Borderlands' is a triumphant piece of narrative, a thrilling romp through an already rich game world piled high with both reverential and tongue-in-cheek nods to its source material. And bullets, if we can measure those in gallons. I wasn’t sure anything could surpass The Wolf Among Us as Telltale’s most engaging series, but Tales from the Borderlands has outdone it with its sharp writing, exciting gameplay, and gallons of personality. People who don't fall into those categories might still love it because it is just that great. Telltale fans will love the smart writing and callbacks to choices made throughout. Borderlands fans will love the fresh take on the dark comedy universe. The only question that remains is, when does Season Two start? A good portion of that praise will be about this finale and how perfectly it brought an end to the adventures of Fiona and Rhys. Tales from the Borderlands has easily been one of Telltale’s finest games, and should be on a few Game of the Year lists come December. You’ll cry when someone is hurt, you’ll laugh when someone says a joke, and you’ll mourn when your time with them is over. By the end of the game most players will feel like they too are a part of that family. The characters, through the events of the story, form a bit of a family unit.
